Justice Department Intensifies Investigation into Obama-Era Officials Regarding 2016 Russian Interference

The Justice Department is preparing grand jury subpoenas for an investigation into former CIA Director John Brennan and other Obama-era officials. This probe targets their handling of intelligence regarding Russian interference in the 2016 election.

U.S. Attorney Jason Reding Quiñones is leading this new investigation in the Southern District of Florida, with evidence slated for grand jury presentation, marking a significant escalation in the ongoing inquiry.

The subpoenas are seeking extensive records, including documents, texts, and emails, directly related to the Intelligence Community's January 2017 assessment of Russian efforts to influence the 2016 election.

This current Florida-based probe follows a 2020 investigation by John Durham, which previously found no criminal wrongdoing by top officials concerning the 2016 election and Russian interference case.

The January 2017 intelligence assessment concluded Russia used disinformation and hacking to undermine Hillary Clinton's campaign and support Trump, though it noted Moscow's efforts had limited impact.
