Federal Judge Urged to Inspect Florida's "Alligator Alcatraz" Amid Detainee Legal Access and Condition Concerns

Attorneys have formally requested federal Judge Sheri Polster Chappell to conduct an unscheduled visit to the "Alligator Alcatraz" immigration detention facility in the Florida Everglades to assess detainees' access to legal counsel.

Detainees' lawsuit alleges severe restrictions on attorney access, significant scheduling delays, and unsanitary conditions, including non-flushing toilets and fecal waste, which impede their ability to prepare legal defenses.

The facility, constructed this summer by a Republican Governor at a remote airstrip, is at the center of a federal lawsuit challenging its operational practices and Florida's authority over federal immigration detention.

Despite a court-ordered meeting between detainees' lawyers and government attorneys, nine hours of negotiations failed to yield a resolution, and a preliminary injunction to close the facility was denied last week.

This legal challenge is part of three ongoing actions, with President Trump having previously considered such detention centers as a model for expanding nationwide deportation infrastructure, underscoring the broader policy implications.
