Los Angeles County Medical Examiner said Kevin Johnson, 55, died of blunt head trauma and stab wounds and was pronounced dead Wednesday at a Los Angeles homeless encampment; the manner of death was ruled homicide.
Investigators believe Johnson had been living at the encampment, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said it is investigating the death as a homicide.
Bruce Todd, who said he was Johnson's best friend and best man at his wedding, told ABC7 Eyewitness News "He was my best friend"; authorities have not announced any suspects, the station reported.
Johnson had 43 tackles, including seven sacks, with the Philadelphia Eagles and played 15 games for the Oakland Raiders in 1997, according to league records.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department asked anyone with information to contact its homicide bureau as the investigation continues and no arrests have been reported, officials said.
