Overview
Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin posted images on X showing what she said was the severed tip of a Homeland Security Investigations officer's fourth right-digit, and she said the officer "will lose his finger," according to a DHS statement.
The incident occurred the same day U.S. Border Patrol agents fatally shot 37-year-old Alex Pretti at 9:05 a.m. local time during a targeted enforcement operation, DHS said, touching off large clashes between protesters and federal officers.
Border Patrol Chief Greg Bovino said agents were confronted by about 200 people who obstructed and assaulted officers and that two demonstrators were arrested for allegedly assaulting federal officers, officials said.
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz activated the Minnesota National Guard at Mayor Jacob Frey's request and Hennepin County Sheriff Dawanna Witt requested Guard support at the B.H. Whipple Federal Building, with the guard confirming additional mobilization, officials said.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said an investigation into the shooting is underway and President Donald Trump and other federal officials called for local authorities to allow federal agents to operate, while local leaders disputed aspects of the federal account, officials said.
