Overview
Coast Guard Commander Romel Dua said the M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 sank after midnight about a nautical mile from Baluk-baluk, Basilan province, killing at least 18 people.
Dua said the steel-hulled ferry carrying 332 passengers and 27 crew apparently encountered technical problems, abruptly tilted and took on water, and that the coastguard has opened an inquiry.
The Philippine Coast Guard, navy ships, a surveillance plane, an Air Force Black Hawk helicopter and fishing boats conducted search-and-rescue operations and rescued between 215 and 316 people, officials said, reflecting conflicting tallies.
If the manifest of 332 passengers and 27 crew is accurate, officials said between 25 and 137 people remain unaccounted for depending on which rescue and body-recovery tallies are used.
A rescued passenger, Mohamad Khan, told volunteer rescuer Gamar Alih in a Facebook video that his six-month-old baby drowned, and Basilan Governor Mujiv Hataman said darkness and rough seas were hampering searches.
Analysis
Center-leaning sources are largely neutral: they attribute claims, use cautious terms ('apparently', 'not immediately clear'), and separate emotional eyewitness quotes as source content. Reporting provides contextual background (historical Dona Paz reference; common causes like poor maintenance) but treats these as general explanation rather than asserting blame, so editorial framing is minimal.
